Ultrasonic cleaning

Ultrasound propagates itself in liquid in the form of longitudinal waves. Dense spots and fluxes form in parallel with this, with the corresponding pressure and tensile forces.

A fluid is known to be held together by the internal attractive forces of cohesion. Their strength determines the tensile strength.

If the intensity of ultrasound is continuously increased, the following will happen sooner or later. The tensile forces become so strong during the flux phase that the fluid begins to tear at many points. This tearing produces microscopic cavities, almost all of which contain a vacuum. In the subsequent pressure phase these cavities are caused to implode. Their collapse releases extreme forces which lead to the formation of micro shock waves and microcurrents.

This physical process- called "cavitation" is also known in other fields where high tensile forces act on a fluid, e.g. in a ship's screws.

This forces are encouraged to occur at the contact surface of immersed objects. Any existing contamination is torn off and precipitated into the fluid.

In truly pure or clean fluids the tensile strength is so great that present day ultrasonic generators cannot produce sufficient tensile forces to form cavities. In reality, however, gases, dust and other particles in solution within the fluid reduce its tensile strength. The effect is comparable to the reduction in the strength of solid body caused by cracks.

Cavitation is affected by many parameters. It depends on the external pressure, the temperature, the sound frequency, the type of fluid and other elements. In the final analysis, cavitation causes an excellent cleaning effect, similar to attack by thousands of tiny brushes.

If ultrasonic cleaning is continued over a period of hours, the surface to be cleaned begins to abrade visibly. Cavitation alone cannot achieve the optimum cleaning effect and cleaning chemical also has to be properly selected for the best performance.

Advantages of Ultrasonic Cleaning

1)  Ultrasonic cleans the surface and cavities without scratching, brushing or scraping.

2)  Even the most complex geometry objects such as fissures and blind holes can be completely cleaned.

3)  Ultrasonic takes very short time for cleaning, normally it takes a few seconds to clean objects.

4)  Ultrasonic is very simple and easy to handle. Concentration of chemicals required for Ultrasonic is less than in conventional cleaning.

5) The complete cleaning cycle can be automated, giving higher efficiency and reproducibility of the cleaned component.

6) The laborious and non-popular manual work is converted into a pleasant experience with ultrasonics.
